What Is a Neck Lift?
A neck lift, also called a neck plasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure used to rejuvenate the appearance of the neck. A neck plasty is a common procedure for patients of every age, gender, and level of health. This is a procedure that can neaten your appearance, redefine your jawline, and shave years off your overall appearance. With Dr. Ferguson at the helm of your procedure, you can finally be confident in the way you look again.
Why Should I Consider a Neck Lift?
There are many reasons why this procedure might be your best option. Two of the top reasons patients consider this procedure include removing excess skin on the neck and eliminating excess fat beneath the chin. A neck plasty is the simplest, most straight-forward procedure to tighten skin and remove fat at the same time, which is why the procedure is often the first option patients look into.
While many patients initially consider a neck plasty for the purely cosmetic reason of being unsatisfied by their appearance, there are some conditions that this procedure can also treat. For example, this procedure can be useful in correcting an irregular salivary gland, the placement of the hyoid bone, and irregular muscles in the neck. If you have any of these issues, a neck plasty may the right corrective procedure for you.
What Causes Excess Skin on the Neck?
There are two common causes for excess skin on the neck. The first is rapid weight loss, which leaves skin loose from the sudden disappearance of fat deposits beneath the skin surface. Loose skin on the neck from weight loss can actually undermine your healthy appearance, making you appear too thin rather than fit.
The second cause for excess skin on the neck is aging. As we age, we tend to lose volume in our skin which creates a laxity that gives the impression of excess skin. Age-related causes for excess skin have multiple treatment options, such as injections or topical treatments. However, for patients with greater or more severe skin laxity on the neck, a neck plasty is often the only procedure that can adequately lift the skin into a higher position.
What Causes Excess Fat Beneath the Chin?
Excess fat beneath the chin – also known as the dreaded double chin – is not only caused by being overweight. In fact, many people in a healthy weight range also have double chins. The truth of the matter is that excess fat beneath the chin is often caused by a genetic predisposition to store extra fat in the body. Genetic predispositions are difficult to combat with lifestyle changes, which is why neck treatments are used to remove excess fat and create a healthier, more youthful appearance.
What Can I Expect Before a Neck Lift?
For any cosmetic treatment, there are a few steps that you have to take before the treatment. With a neck plasty at our clinic, you can expect to take a couple of steps before you are ready for the procedure.
You will have an initial consultation with Dr. Ferguson and our skilled staff. The initial consultation will include a discussion about your aesthetic goals and a thorough examination of your neck to assess the level of skin laxity and the amount of excess fat present beneath the chin. This part of the consultation will help us determine if a neck plasty is the right intervention for your cosmetic goals.
If a neck plasty is right for you, we will need to gather some information about you. We will ask for your general medical history, your current use of medications or supplements, and any cosmetic treatments you have had in the past. We may also ask about any drug allergies you may have.
Given the nature of a neck plasty being an invasive treatment, it is likely we will have to use a local anesthesia or sedative during the procedure. For this reason, you may be asked to complete certain lab tests or evaluations before your appointment. If you are on certain medications, we may also need to consult with your doctor to create a treatment plan.
You will be given a list of instructions to follow before your appointment. These guidelines are important to follow so that your treatment goes exactly as planned. These could include:
- Stop or adjust certain medications
- Stop the use of certain supplements
- Avoid smoking and alcohol for 3 to 7 days before treatment
- Avoid certain foods for 1 to 3 days before treatment
- Fast immediately before treatment
You may also be asked to arrange transportation on the day of your appointment. Although your treatment may be an outpatient appointment, we sometimes advise arranging transportation based on your general health and the expected treatment plan.
What Can I Expect During a Neck Lift?
Most of the time, we complete the neck plasty procedure at our clinic where you are an outpatient. Many patients are curious about the exact steps involved in a neck plasty and are surprised to learn that the procedure itself is generally a three-step process.
We will administer anesthesia to you for your comfort for the duration of the procedure. At our office, we typically use a local anesthesia to numb the treatment area, which means that you will be awake during the treatment. For some patients, we also include a sedative if they would rather not be aware of the procedure as it is happening. We will help you decide which course of anesthesia will help you have the best experience.
For a neck plasty, there are usually only a few incisions that are made at either side of the jaw just beneath the ears. These incisions are small and are used to reposition skin into a higher position. If your neck plasty also includes liposuction, we will likely have to make an additional small incision beneath the chin. All incisions are made thoughtfully to minimize scarring and maximize results.
The last step of your procedure will be the closing of the incisions. Depending on your skin condition and the type of incisions that were made, incisions are closed with small stitches, dissolving sutures, or skin glue. Once the incisions are closed, we will clean and dress the treatment site. From start to finish, a neck plasty can take from 2 to 4 hours to complete.
What Can I Expect After a Neck Lift?
After your procedure is complete, you are free to return home. The recovery portion of this type of treatment is relatively quick, with many patients returning to most normal daily activities 3 to 7 days after treatment.
You will be given instructions to follow after your procedure is complete. These guidelines will help your recovery be as short and successful as possible.
- Avoid smoking and alcohol for 3 to 7 days after treatment
- Avoid the use of certain supplements, medications, or products for a few days
- Avoid strenuous activity and excessive heat for a few days
- Sleep elevated for 5 to 7 days after treatment
We will also provide you with instructions on how to care for the closed incisions. We will schedule a follow-up appointment 1 to 2 weeks after your treatment to see how well you are recovering.
Aside from following the post-treatment guidelines and attending your follow-up appointment, the recovery portion of this treatment is simple and quick. You will likely experience some soreness or minor bruising at the treatment site, but these are temporary side effects that fade within a week of your treatment. Most patients are fully recovered and able to return to all normal activity 1 to 2 weeks following treatment.
Are There Other Neck Treatments?
While a neck plasty might be the classic treatment to lift the neck, a more youthful appearance can be accomplished through other techniques too. At our clinic, we specialize in several methods of treatment for neatening your profile. If a traditional neck plasty is not right for you, Dr. Ferguson and our expert staff will help you determine which alternative treatment is right for you.
SmartLipo is a neck liposuction treatment that eliminates excess fat beneath the chin. This is a minimally invasive treatment that is best suited to patients who have mild-to-moderate fullness beneath the chin without any skin laxity. SmartLipo may be a good option for patients who only have moderate concerns about their appearance.
A thread lift is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a small thread to manually lift the tissues beneath the skin of the neck to lift the appearance of the neck. A thread lift is usually a good option for patients who have moderate-to-severe skin laxity or who need to correct loose muscles on the neck.
A ribbon lift is a minimally invasive treatment that is similar to a thread lift. However, a ribbon lift is designed to be used on the upper neck and jowls to lift skin into a higher, more youthful position. A ribbon lift is ideal for patients who have moderate-to-severe skin laxity and who are not interested in surgical procedures.
Thermage is a non-invasive radiofrequency treatment that can be used to tighten skin on the neck and mid-face, particularly the jawline and jowls. Thermage is a good option for patients who have mild skin laxity and do not require more extensive cosmetic intervention. Thermage treatment on the neck can also be extended to other areas of the face or upper chest.
Who Are Ideal Candidates for Neck Lift?
Ideal candidates for neck plasty or alternate neck treatments are individuals who are not satisfied with their overall appearance. These treatments are appropriate for patients of any age, gender, or skin condition. You may be an ideal candidate if you want to:
- Tighten lax skin on the neck, jawline, and jowls
