Abdominoplasty: Tummy Tuck
What is Abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the abdomen by removing excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying muscles. This procedure is particularly popular among individuals who have experienced significant weight loss or pregnancy, which can result in loose, sagging skin and weakened abdominal muscles.
What To Expect
The procedure begins with a detailed consultation, during which the surgeon evaluates the patient’s health, medical history, and aesthetic goals. Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are typically in good overall health, have stable body weight, and do not smoke. The surgeon will also discuss the various types of abdominoplasty procedures, such as a full tummy tuck, mini tummy tuck, or extended tummy tuck, to determine the best approach for the patient’s needs.
During the surgery, which is usually performed under general anesthesia, the surgeon makes a horizontal incision just above the pubic area, extending from hip to hip. The length and shape of the incision depend on the amount of excess skin and the specific technique used. In a full tummy tuck, the surgeon may also make a second incision around the navel to remove skin from the upper abdomen. After making the incisions, the surgeon lifts the skin and repairs and tightens the underlying abdominal muscles using sutures. Excess skin and fat are then removed, and the remaining skin is pulled down and sutured together, creating a smoother and firmer abdominal profile. The navel is repositioned to a natural-looking location.
Recovery & After Care
Recovery from abdominoplasty typically involves wearing a compression garment to minimize swelling and support the abdominal area as it heals. Patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks. While initial recovery may take a few weeks, it can take several months for the final results to fully emerge as swelling subsides and the body adjusts to its new contours.
Abdominoplasty can significantly enhance a person’s body image and confidence by providing a flatter, more toned abdomen. However, patients need to maintain a healthy lifestyle to preserve the long-term results of the procedure.
